D1: Arrival in Belgrade
Reception at the airport / train station, transfer to the hotel. Depending on the arrival, free visit of the city. Free dinner.
D2: Guided tour
Guided tour of the capital of Serbia with a dynamic overview of history and culture. Free lunch. Free afternoon. Optional museum visit (Nikola Tesla Museum or Museum of Yugoslavia, subject to availability).
Dinner in town.
D3: The Oplenac complex in Topola; the medieval monastery Manasija
Visit of the complex (1h15 drive), residence of the royal dynasty of Karađorđević. Wine tasting in a vineyard. Lunch. Transfer (1h30), arrival at the Manasija monastery (15th century), famous for its fortifications and its architecture. Installation for one night in the Lisine village.
D4: The Resava cave; a thermal retreat in Sokobanja
Short transfer (20 min) then visit the cave, the most beautiful, best known and probably the oldest in the country. Drive to Sokobanja, a picturesque place in central Serbia to enjoy the thermal water. Lunch. Transfer (1h) and arrival in the city of Niš where we settle for 2 nights.
D5: Visit of Niš, crossroads of the Balkan roads
3rd largest city in Serbia, and located on the "Via militaris" later named "the Road to Constantinople". Niš is also the birthplace of Constantine the Great. City tour: fortress, Medijana archaeological site, Skulls tower. Lunch in a small village near Niš in a typical restaurant. Free dinner in town.
D6: Malča wine cellar; Felix Romuliana's visit
Direction East Serbia. Stop in Malča for lunch of local cuisine and taste the wines. After 1.5 hours on the road, arrival at the Felix Romuliana archaeological site (Unesco heritage): a fortified palace from the late Roman period. Arrival in the city of Bor for one night.
D7: The Lazar canyon; the famous cellars of Rajac
Morning nature and adventure! We are going to the Lazar Canyon, the deepest in eastern Serbia. After the magnificent viewpoints in the canyon, lunch in a charming Rajac village (1h45 drive). Then drive to the city of Donji Milanovac on the Danube which we will not leave until the last day of our stay.
D8: Visit to the Lepenski Vir archaeological site; Golubac fortress
Short transfer to the archaeological site which is on a low Danube terrace: famous sculptures representing human figures with fish-shaped heads. Following the Danube, arrival at the Golubac fortress (XIV) ideal for the control of the borders between Serbia, the Habsburgs and the Ottoman Empire. The afternoon is reserved for the city of Smederevo where we stay one night.
D9: Fortress of Smederevo; Avala, the blue mountain
The fortress (15th century), designed to replace Belgrade, represents the last great work of Serbian military architecture of the Middle Ages. Road to Belgrade with break in Avala mountain. Magnificent view of Belgrade and a good part of Serbia. Lunch break. Arrival in Belgrade, installation at the hotel. Last dinner together in the bohemian district of Skadarlija.
